"Any idea when you're interviewing the Haim sisters?" an inquiry arrives. "My request was to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

It's clear a special quality is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their career doing sets at local delicatessens with their family. Now they're multi-time Grammy nominees.

Like all the most iconic groups, they're a tight-knit unit. Their visuals frequently show them marching in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such unfettered happiness you can't help but think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a bass'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That's the biggest compliment. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire others to make music."

"So all are welcome to be the honorary part of the family."

Award Milestone

The band are speaking from their homes, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-female band ever in consideration for the award.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the nomination isn't lost on the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant step," says Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the female artists that came before us."

Heartbreak and Candor

The album came out of a period of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that odd transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The lyrics track breakups and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in the moment who they aspire to be.

"I love description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to actively work on shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That developed resilience called for a new sound – more organic and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drums.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Humor

The trio's honesty fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic tales.

One man left Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Legacy

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide fan base.

But the sister act will forever be their top commitment.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was four," says Alana. "There is no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still making music."
