New research reveals that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using these medications need to be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
People who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something flipping and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
