Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.

Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.

Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
